Uncovered layer by layer
All white! Many of the opulent and colourful decorative paintings in Villa Patumbah were hidden beneath layers of white paint for decades. Between 2010 and 2013, the villa – built in the 19th century by Zurich-born Carl Grob using money earned from tobacco cultivation in Sumatra – underwent extensive restoration. Together with restorer Christian Marty, we will trace the history of the paintings and their rebirth, and explore different approaches to working with the original. In the practical session, we will trace individual motifs, thereby gaining an understanding of the stylistic language of decorative painting from the period.
